Film idea presentation

Our film idea presentation in brief with some questions and answers from our peers.

Guide to our logo

Step 1: I started by making a blank white canvas with a good size to include some shapes and text.
Step 2: I added a simple black circle that covers the canvas.
Step 3: I added a circle with transparent fill and a white boarder with a line size of 19. Then I moved this to cover one end of the circle to make a crescent shape.
Step 4: I added the Eclipse Productions text in Castellar font in bold and with a white boarder. Then I moved this so the text starts inside the black circle.

Result Graphs

These graphs show the results of our questionnaire that will help us to produce a film opening that the general public will enjoy.

Original individual film idea

As Media studies film ideas
My film will be a crime and thriller. The film will create suspense throughout as there is an unknown murderer. The film will create a hook from the start as all we can see and hear is someone running, but why?

Review of questionnaire

My Questionnaire has shown me a few important things about what the audience prefers in a film. From the answers i know that the most common preferred genres are romance and thriller. I have also found out that a good film opening should be between 4 to 6 minutes long, and the most people recognize and pay attention to music in films.
This information i have gathered will guide me on how to make a good film opening for my final project that others will enjoy.

Ideas

Today i came up with some ideas for the film opening final project. I believe they are good however i shall share them with my group and class to get feedback.

Codes used in Fight Club

FIGHT CLUB

The Hook
The hook shows a man with what appears to gun in his mouth leaving the audience with the question why. This is a technical code

Set the Scene
The audience are able to see some of the setting behind the man but not a lot, this is a symbolic code.

Introduce Characters
The audience is only shown one character however other important actors are shown in the credits. This is a written and symbolic code.

Introduce Genre
The opening sequence is rather dark and mysterious, this sets a thriller genre. This is a technical code.

SE7EN

Preliminary exercise

EVALUATION
This is our groups preliminary exercise.
Our preliminary exercise went well well used plenty of different camera shots, remembering to use match on action, shot/reverse shot and remembering not to break 180 degree rule.
We need to improve our editing and cutting, there are also a few continuity errors in there which we need to fix and edit out for our final video.

Codes and Conventions in media

Codes:
Media students identify three categories of codes that may be used to

convey meanings in media messages:

TECHNICAL CODES,
which include camera techniques, framing, depth of field, Mise en scene, editing,  lighting and sound;

SYMBOLIC CODES,
which refer to objects, setting, body language, clothing and colour.

WRITTEN CODES
in the form of headlines, captions, speech bubbles and language style.

Conventions:
Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something, and in the case of media texts, they are generally accepted patterns of code that communicate a particular message.
There are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre specific. For example, in Westerns fights scenes are generally shot from a low angle, the setting is usually dusty and desolate, and even the sounds used within the scene are conventional, such as castonettes, or some sort of whistle.

Main exercise

The main titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last maximum of 2 minutes.

Preliminary Exercise Filming!

Today was our first lesson of filming. We used a tripod and camera to film our short, few minutes long  Preliminary Exercise. we made sure to use Shot/Reverse Shot, Match On Action and 180 Degree rule. we also kept in mind Continuity when filming.

Wednesday, 19 September 2012

High Angle, Low Angle

High Angle
a high angle shot will show the scene/ setting from above in "birds eye view". This is mainly used to set a scene as show all of the action happening below.

Low Angle
a low angle shot will show people from bellow looking upwards in a "worms eye view". This shot is mainly used to give a sense of power and higher status to the character(s).

Close-up, Mid-Shot, Long-Shot

Close-Up
a close will show only the focus of the shot in the camera. close-up shots will zoom in onto a certain object or person to show exactly who or what we want the audience to see and nothing else.

Mid-Shot
a mid-shot allows us to see all of most of a person/people or a large object. this gives the audience someone or something to focus on but also a view of the setting and scene, and anything to notice in the background.
Long-Shot
a long shot will show an object buildings or people, however they will be small and in the background. this gives a sense of distance, this shot also allows the audience to see the full setting and scene.

Shot/Reverse Shot

Shot/Reverse Shot is where a character is shown in a shot looking at another character, then another character is shown in the next shot looking back at the first character, this shows characters facing eachother therefore the viewers assume they characters are talking to eachother.

180 Degree Rule

180 Degree Rule is when the camera will only show what is happening from one side theefore avioding confusing the audience. if two people where speaking in a scene the camera will show a shot af the first person speaking facing one way, and the second person will be shown in the next shot when they are speaking, facing the other way towards the person they are talking to, not crossing over 180 degree angle, this then clearly shows they are talking to eachother.

Match on Action

Match on Action is when the camera will show every action going on, for example if somebody goes to open a door the camera will so a close up of the characters hand pulling on the handle.

Continuity

Continuity is keeping every shot the same as before. keeping consistent with characteristics, plots, places, objects and costumes.

Making  clear continuity errors will distract the auidience.

Preliminary Exercise - Brief

Produce a continuinty exercise which involves a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom they exchange a couple of lines of dialogue. The task should demonstrate:

-Match on action
-Shot/Reverse shot
-180 degree rule
