Preliminary Exercise Filming!

Today was our first lesson of filming. We used a tripod and camera to film our short, few minutes long  Preliminary Exercise. we made sure to use Shot/Reverse Shot, Match On Action and 180 Degree rule. we also kept in mind Continuity when filming.

High Angle, Low Angle

High Angle
a high angle shot will show the scene/ setting from above in "birds eye view". This is mainly used to set a scene as show all of the action happening below.

Low Angle
a low angle shot will show people from bellow looking upwards in a "worms eye view". This shot is mainly used to give a sense of power and higher status to the character(s).

Close-up, Mid-Shot, Long-Shot

Close-Up
a close will show only the focus of the shot in the camera. close-up shots will zoom in onto a certain object or person to show exactly who or what we want the audience to see and nothing else.

Mid-Shot
a mid-shot allows us to see all of most of a person/people or a large object. this gives the audience someone or something to focus on but also a view of the setting and scene, and anything to notice in the background.

Long-Shot
a long shot will show an object buildings or people, however they will be small and in the background. this gives a sense of distance, this shot also allows the audience to see the full setting and scene.

Shot/Reverse Shot

Shot/Reverse Shot is where a character is shown in a shot looking at another character, then another character is shown in the next shot looking back at the first character, this shows characters facing eachother therefore the viewers assume they characters are talking to eachother.

180 Degree Rule

180 Degree Rule is when the camera will only show what is happening from one side theefore avioding confusing the audience. if two people where speaking in a scene the camera will show a shot af the first person speaking facing one way, and the second person will be shown in the next shot when they are speaking, facing the other way towards the person they are talking to, not crossing over 180 degree angle, this then clearly shows they are talking to eachother.

Match on Action

Match on Action is when the camera will show every action going on, for example if somebody goes to open a door the camera will so a close up of the characters hand pulling on the handle.

Continuity

Continuity is keeping every shot the same as before. keeping consistent with characteristics, plots, places, objects and costumes.

Making  clear continuity errors will distract the auidience.

Preliminary Exercise - Brief

Produce a continuinty exercise which involves a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom they exchange a couple of lines of dialogue. The task should demonstrate:

-Match on action
-Shot/Reverse shot
-180 degree rule
